Toft Hall is situated on the western edge of the Peak District – and on a clear day, there are views for miles to the Welsh mountains. A grade II listed building, Toft Hall was once the home of the High Sheriff of Staffordshire and was originally built in approximately 1590. Since 2004 it has been owned and managed by Party Houses and our staff, making sure it keeps its traditional feel, but with modern comforts. Needless to say, there are a wealth of exposed beams and quirky features (including wattle and daub panels and a cruck frame). With a lovely mature garden, Toft Hall is the venue to choose if you like a quirky house! You can add on Toft Nook for an extra 2/3 guests, it is an outhouse in the same courtyard with a double bedroom, shower room, sofa bed, and kitchenette.

Toft Hall’s living room has the sort of squashy leather sofas, that you don’t want to get up from! With wonderful views to the west and a door direct to the garden, in the summer the thick stone walls ensure that it is always cool, and in the winter the large wood burning stove and thick curtains mean that you feel cosy and warm, offering the ideal place to get-together. Inside you’ll find an LCD TV, DVD player, as well as lots of books.
You’ll find that this lovely venue also has a separate music room, with space for more people to sit and relax with stunning views onto the surrounding Peak District, lots of original beams and even 17th century shutters, it is the perfect place for a break-out party, with a stereo (just bringer own cable and music device), comfortable sofas, and thick walls for you to sing to your heart’s content! You will also find a piano in here for those looking for some live music to sing along to!
Finally, the little Snug, with it’s exposed wattle and daub wall completes the trio of social spaces. Here you can find an Xbox and large TV to enjoy games or movies on. Or even sit back and read a book. There is also a beer fridge in here for extra storage.
The Dining Room, with delicate lighting and an exposed 16th century stone fireplace, is specially designed for evening use. One large table can seat up to 20. Just add fresh flowers from the garden, good food and wine and this is the perfect place for those special evenings in with friends. (Don’t forget to inquire about having Chef and waitresses in to prepare and serve a unique meal for you).
Leading off you will find a unique Maple wood and granite topped kitchen handmade by Smallbone. This has everything that you need in a home away from home. A built-in microwave combination oven and two additional Neff ovens will cater for the largest of meals. It also contains a washer/dryer and dishwasher and a fridge freezer, (with plenty of rooms to chill those bottles!). The equipment is of the highest standard and includes just about everything you can think of.
There is a door leading off the Smallbone kitchen is a secondary Kitchen. This kitchen also has an oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, and washing machine. It is sometimes used to cook a meal for younger children whilst in the main kitchen preparations are underway for a ‘posh grown-up’ meal.
Bedrooms and Bathrooms
After your party no doubt your guests will just want to lay back and relax in comfort, so all our beds have thick warm duvets to fall asleep in, as well as quality mattresses, no one will want to get up! All our bedrooms have comfortable carpeted floors, with most having lovely views onto either the gardens or the surrounding Peak District.
Toft Hall also has 6 bath/ shower rooms, situated throughout the house, with lots of warm water for all your guests.
Toft Hall has a lovely large garden to enjoy (or cook that perfect summertime BBQ!). Surrounded by the original lovely stone walls on two sides, the view to the West is far-reaching and simply stunning (on a clear day you can see the Welsh hills c 50 miles away!). It has plenty of outdoor seating for everyone, flower beds, an arbour and a herb circle, plus grass for that impromptu kick around.

Jump into a lovely warm bubbly hot tub in Toft Hall's private garden! There isn't one on-site but it is possible to rent out a hot tub from a third party supplier who can deliver for your stay. We can provide recommendations that know our houses and provide competitive prices. Please note Party Houses charges an extra £40 for Hot Tubs used on our site.

Access Statement for Toft Hall
This large self catering house is a Jacobean Hall built in the late 1500s. As a listed building Toft Hall has interesting architectural features. Whilst we aim to welcome all guests there are some period features that might make access difficult for people with limited mobility. Other Party Houses have specially designed features which are suitable for the less mobile.
- We can offer the use of a Deaf Guard system for guests who are hard of hearing and unlikely to hear the fire alarm system.
- This is placed under your pillow at night and will vibrate and lights flash should the fire alarms go off. Please let us know before arrival if you wish to borrow the Deaf Guard.
- A telescopic ramp can be provided – please book in advance. It is a 7 foot twin ramp, overall width 260mm (each), useable width (internal each) 200mm, load maximum 230 kgs with a 65mm edge. They are made of strong aluminium with a black non slip covering suitable for heavy wheelchairs and scooters.
- Hire of additional mobility equipment can be arranged through Moorland Mobility (who will also deliver and collect). Please call Malcolm on 01538 381515 (closed Sundays) or visit moorlandmobility.co.uk. Alternatively the local Red Cross also have some equipment for loan free of charge.
- In Leek there are accessible toilets (on RADAR key schemes) in Silk Street, Leek Bus Station and in the council offices at Moorlands House off Stockwell Street
- There is a Shop Mobility Scheme at The Potteries Shopping Centre in Hanley, Stoke on Trent and also in Macclesfield
- The nearest shops are in Leek (c 5 miles) but Tesco.com and peakdistrictfinefoods.co.uk (local farmers market on wheels) will both deliver
- The nearest train station is Stoke on Trent (London Euston c 1hour 35 minutes)
- There are usually accessible taxis at the station
- Alternatively travel to Macclesfield Station and catch the bus from Macclesfield to Ashbourne which stops in Rushton Spencer (c 2 miles)
- Arrival and Car Parking Facilities
- To ensure that your accommodation is ready we ask that guests do not arrive before 4pm. Earlier arrival my be possible by prior arrangement
- There is plenty of free parking outside the Hall on the gravel driveway which slopes gently
- Cars can be parked immediately outside the second front door, with plenty of room for access to the vehicle
- The driveway to the front of the property is an unadopted drive and can be bumpy but it is large enough for coaches and minibuses to use and turn around in front of the Hall
- There is outside lighting as night which lights up on sensitivity of movement
- The pathway to the main front door has three steps – 15cm, 17cm and 10 cm high
- The second front door has no step (just the weather lip c 1cm)
- Main Entrance and Reception
- There are two front entrances to Toft Hall
- The main entrance is reached via three steps up a short path (step heights = 15 cm, 17cm and 10cm)
- The second front door has no steps (only a weather board c 1 cm high) and can be parked directly outside
- Inside the front door entrance (door width 90cm) there are corridors (minimum width 90cm) leading to downstairs toilet, music room, snug and dining room. The main stair case rises opposite the front door (staircase width 62cm)
- The entrance hall floor is of old stone flags
- There is a door to the rear garden with weatherboard lip of c 2cm, beyond this door is a stone patio.
- Registered Assistance Dogs are very welcome at no charge
- Public Areas
- There are no lifts
- There are no public phones, but mobile reception is available on all networks (although sometimes you have to move around the property to optimise reception)
- Lighting varies by room. Most rooms have central pendants; the dining room and music room have wall lights only. The kitchen is lit by spotlights.
- All exit routes, including staircases and hallways, have emergency lighting which is either on all the time (staircases) or will come on in the event of a power failure
- The two staircases are both carpeted and have handrails. The main staircase is 62cm width with turns. The secondary staircase (to the first floor only) is a straight rise and 75cm wide (with an ground floor access fire door of 70cm wide)
- There is a step down to a twin bedroom on the first floor. There are steps between this corridor and the quad bedroom.
- There is one small ground floor toilet
- A baby bath and child steps to reach sinks are provided
- The downstairs toilet has limited space and measures 43cm high to the seat
- The basin is small and 90cm high with separate hot and cold water taps
- The door opens onto the corridor
- The dining room has three doors into it – via the hallway (width 80cm), the kitchen (width 72cm) and living room (width 82cm
- The floor is wooden parquet. The dining table measures 3m67cm x 2m16cm. The height of the under space of the table is 75cm from the floor and the table is 77cm high.
- There is limited space behind the table on two sides
- Chairs (all moveable) there are 20 chairs with leather seats and no arms. The chairs are 48cm high
- This is accessed via the dining room (door 82cm wide) or kitchen (door 87 cm wide)
- Flooring is of original quarry tiles and rugs.
- Sofas and easy chairs are provided as well as stools and poufs
- Teletext TV is provided with remote control as well as DVD player
- There is a door (80cm wide) to the garden (with a small step of 7cm) onto a gravel path
- This is accessed via the main hallway (door 80cm wide)
- The Music Room has an oak wooden floor with rugs

- The fitted units are made by Smallbone and have granite work surfaces (worktop height is 92cm)
- There is plenty of china, cutlery and glassware for all guests
- A large American fridge/freezer is provided which can be used to store medication (highest shelf in fridge is 1m45cm and the lowest drawer in freezer is 35cm)
- The kitchen contains a washer/dryer, double oven and hob, and microwave
- There is a second small kitchen at Toft Hall, which also contains a washer/dryer, double oven and hob, fridge, and microwave (worktop height is 90cm)
- There is no shop available on site
- The nearest shopping centre is Leek, with four supermarkets, Boots, WH Smith and most other requirements catered for.

- The garden has gravel paths and some steps to some sections. It slopes on a slight hill. There are two rear doors from the property into the garden, neither of which involve steps but they do have weather board strips of c 1 cm on each door base

Toft Hall History
No one is exactly sure when Toft Hall was built but there is evidence of Ellen Toft living locally in the late 1500s and beginning of the 1600’s which is certainly the date that the historic house experts believe it was built. At that time it was called Tofthall Farm.
The original house was the section you can see to the right of the photo.
It was built with a cruck frame (a large oak tree would have been grown with a curved trunk or large branch and this was then split down the middle to form the main arch beam of the house). It was built by someone of local wealth as the stone is beautifully dressed. There are still a few of the original small mullion windows on the top floor and evidence in the stone work of where the others were before they were replaced by fashionable sash windows in the 18th century. Inside the oldest part of the house you can still see some walls of wattle and daub preserved behind glass.
In approx 1690 a kitchen was built on the left hand side (ignore the porch – this is a much later addition!). When you are in this room (now the second kitchen) you can see the absolutely massive beam which would have been in front of the fire. Due to the fire risk the kitchen was not linked directly to the main house and the servants would have had to go outside and back in again through another door!
By 1741 the High Sheriff of Staffordshire (the King’s representative in the County), William Armett, was living here. According to A History of the County of Stafford volume 7 “he improved the house and laid out a walled garden. Known at Toft Hall by 1775, the house was remodelled and extended to the south in the mid 19th century”. Actually we believe the southern extension was there earlier than this! We found a coin dated 1794 hidden behind the plaster – very likely placed here by the builders as a good luck charm. This southern extension is now the living room and with bedrooms on the two floors above. This allowed access to both sides of the house, so no more facing the elements to move food from one side to the other!
In the 19th century other improvements were made. In the cellars (sadly not open to guests) there is an arched roof made from dressed stone. We haven’t found anyone yet who can explain why anyone would have spent so much money on a cellar room.
The house was occupied by large extended families and their servants. Census data from the late 19th century show many people living here. One of the locals told us how his job as a young man was to polish the floor in what is now the living room with the especially creamy milk that is produced immediately after calving! The house continued to be lived in up to the early 1990’s but had gradually fallen into decline. By 1996 when we bought the property it was so derelict that it had gone to auction and not sold. You could stand in the cellar and look up 4 storeys and see the sky through the holes in the roof and floors!
Working with the local conservation officer and a greatly sympathetic building team it was brought back to life. The walled garden had cows in and was no more than rough field. The new garden was designed to be in keeping with earlier garden design styles.
Today Toft Hall is a lovely quirky house. It still shows many signs of it’s over 400 years of history. It is not a ‘grand’ house but has always been a family home and it is easy to imagine previous occupants going about their lives there. Enjoy!
